Disc Sander

INTRODUCTION :

A sander machine is used to smooth materials such as woods and plastics. It is also used to remove small amounts of waste particles. The material is carefully and lightly pushed against the rotating disk and at the same time moved from left to right.

In this drill powered sanding machine we can change the disc also. Here, I have used three different types of sanding wheel such as paper disc sander, flap disc sander and 4” grinding wheel. From this sander machine you can make precise angles in wood and metal. With this machine you can produce brilliant outer edge curves, and very accurate circles. You can accurately and quickly remove material and flatten off stock that’s too small to be safely planed. You can sharpen tools, tidy up rough edges, square up, and do extreme toenail manicure. Also this machine has an adjustable table. This allows the work piece material to be sanded to an angle. I have used bolts and fly nuts to allows the table to be adjusted, the locking nuts or fly nuts are then tightened for keeping the table in the position. This can be very useful. However, the gap between the table and the disc increases as the angle of disc is increased. This means that greater care must be taken when sanding work piece to produce an angle.

Parts Used :

  • Plywood for base 20”*7” (19mm thickness)
  • Plywood for worktable 7”*5.5” (19mm thickness)2 pieces of 2”*5.5” (19mmthickness)
  • Wooden piece for drill holder 7”*5” (30mm thickness)
  • Sheet metal for worktable 7”*5.5”
  • 2 Nos. 3/8 bolts with fly nuts (5.5” length)
  • 4 Nos. 5/16 bolts with fly nuts (1.25” length)
  • 2 Nos. 1.25” L- section channel (8.25” length)
  • Screws

How to make :

First of all, cut the 19mm plywood of 20”*7” size for base of the sander machine.

Next step is, make a drill machine holder. I have used 30mm thickness wooden piece of 7”*5” size, to make a drill machine holder. So, cut it from the half and make two pieces of the wooden piece. Drill a 2” diameter hole using a 2” hole saw as shown in the image.

Now, attach this wooden piece and 2 Nos. 3/8 bolts with fly nuts (5.5” length) with the base using of screws, as shown in the image.

Attach the drill machine in this drill holder using of fly nuts.

Next step is, make adjustable work table. Dimension of plywood for worktable is 7”*5.5” and 2 pieces of 2”*5.5” (19mm thickness). Attach all three pieces using of screws. Also cut 2 nos. 1.25” L- section channel (8.25” length). Make slots on this L-section channel as shown in the image.

Now, attach the L-section channel and worktable with the base. I have used 4 Nos. 5/16 bolts with fly nuts (1.25” length) to make it adjustable, shown in the image. Fly nuts are then tightened for keeping the table in the position and at the last I attach the sheet metal on worktable using of glue for better strength.

    hi,
it was a fantastic way to build a drill sander from a Drill, it would also be good if you could share the cost of the parts that you used.
    Thanks
